Overview Shiro:
Holo and Shiro are twin sisters who travel the world since childhood in search of adventure. Once they were attacked by the evil witch Satella and took Shiro to her gloomy cave. Now Holo has to find his sister. Help Holo find her sister. Overcome a dense forest, an ancient temple, dangerous dungeons and destroy enemies in this pixelated adventure platformer! Every other moment in Shiro made me say “I will never play this again nor recommend it to anyone”, but every OTHER moment between those made me say “Actually this is pretty good.” The game opens with a cheesy schmup minigame, but it was the right difficulty curve and it served as a nice introduction. In the first zone of the game I had fun experimenting with the mechanics, which aren’t quite polished to a shine, but work well enough for what the game wants you to do. I had a real-time train of thought that went something like this, “I enjoy this platforming puzzles but this quaint forest all looks way too similar, none of these areas are distinc- oh hey that’s a nice waterfall, I like it.” I found a little caged bird and freed it, which is a cool little secret if you check everything thoroughly, and went to the second area. Probably the most fun one in the game. It adds a bit more to the mechanics, the enemies are a bit tricky sometimes but in a good way, usually. It was fun, fast-paced. The checkpoints are placed in the right places to let you immediately retry anything you’re stuck on. I was happy then. The third zone introduced bouncy walls. Bouncy walls are really cool in the sense that the momentum you get doesn’t make any sense. Also, for the first bouncy wall, if you try to use it while you’re also interacting with another physics-altering mechanic of the game, you will teleport upwards at max speed and your character will get stuck upside-down or sideways and unable to do anything, forcing you to restart the level.
