Dan is a bumbling first-time adventurer who risks everything to solve the legend of the twin books by exploring the abandoned town of Red Pines. Legend has it that a talented artist replicated the Spirits’ Book, and the replica was so perfect that the museum staff mistakenly left the original behind during the evacuation of Red Pines. After learning of the legend, Dan decides to check if it’s true, and recover the book if it is. Join Dan on this light, family-friendly quest and help his love for adventure thrive. A fairly short and sweet point-and-click adventure that works great as an introduction to the genre. The game features several puzzles including Sokoban and stealth-based sneaking around. There are some “Where’s Waldo”-style gameplay where you can look for and collect various caches. What use these caches are, however, remains a mystery.

I’d like to also point out that since it can be sometimes hard to spot these caches, especially when they are hidden among grasses and stuff, the game provides an audio-based hot-cold indicator. Much like in the hot-cold guessing game, the sublime beeping sound in the background will grow more insistent whenever you’re getting close to a cache. For a P&C to be successful though, besides having excellent art and quality voice acting which the game definitely has, the story has to be really good too. In this game, however, it does come across as a bit confusing. I mean, yes I get that the protagonist, the old guy, is looking for the original (probably first edition) book, but the “why” seems rather vague. At the end of the game, the guy wondered the same thing too. So, all in all, Like No Other is a pretty solid P&C that offers a short-ish experience. Considering the string of really great P&Cs I’ve played within the few months, this game does seem to fall a bit short when it comes to the storytelling. It’s quite vague tbh. The game could have laid down the story’s foundation a bit better.
